Avatars
The DDG mentions avatars for the Indian pantheon, and avatars are mentioned again in GHA (though perhaps within the context of 2E, as GHA is a 1E/2E crossover book). With regards to the latter, and specific regards to spheres, remember that spheres were introduced in DLA, which was a 1E book.
Gary wasn't happy with the portrayal of the deities, I have read. (I think I read this in his article about 2E in Dragon).
Anyway, how would you quantify avatars?
Me, I would contemplate 2 different possibilities, to start:
1) Drop them 2 deital levels, and halve all of their class levels, special abilities, etc.
2) Use the stats in Legends & Lore.

Ps. Reading THE ILIAD (well, the story of Troy, from Edith Hamilton's MYTHOLOGY, which is mentioned in the Bibliography of the DDG), and with other myths as well, I think that this is a very important concept. (eg. Why didn't deity X just teleport with no error, and, use a wish?).
Perhaps an avatar is the only way that a deity can manifest outside his or her home plane.
