"As a minimum 20% should be non-white (in line with the population of the USA)" - anonymous
For the sake of discussion, I will counter with this:
"As a minimum 80% should be white (in line with the covers of the Sword & Sorcery novels listed on DMG.224)" - Presponymous
Umm...
Well, let's look at the 3 main AD&D worlds:
1) Dragonlance
2) Forgotten Realms
3) Greyhawk
1) I honestly don't know that much about Dragonlance, but from the art, it seems that most of the humans there are "White". I am sure that there are other sub-races out there, but not sure exactly where. The Plains culture that Riverwind comes from seems to be somehow similar to USA "Indians" (perhaps a mix of Horse Nations and Southwest?). A picture of Riverwind by Parksinson shows him with dark skin.
2) The center of Faerun, the people are basically "White". From there, you have Turmish "maghogany skin", Calishite (pretty close to Arabic it seems), Chult (sort of like black, but there might be non-human/alien admixture in their DNA), and in the Durpar (et al)., I think that the people there are dark-skinned. If you want "the truth", find RACES OF FAERUN, and this will give you thorough details on all of the human sub-races.
3) Greyhawk lays this out clearly in a few pages. There is a lot of racial adxmiture there, and the only ones that are really White that come to mind right now are the Suel, and, probably the barbarians (similar to Norse, one could say), in the far Northeast. (Note: people from those areas are often 'pink'. I think it has something to do with the mead they consume. More scientific tests are needed...)
Now, those aren't "the facts" - all of that is just written from memory. If anyone has more detailed/correct info, please send!
I will add
4) Epic of Aerth
I consider this one to be one of the best potential AD&D settings.
(If you don't know Aerth, it is basically "Fantasy Earth", by Gary Gygax, originally written for the DANGEROUS JOURNEYS (Mythus) system).
On Aerth, Gary goes into a little detail about the races (Black, Brown, Red, White, Yellow).
In summary, I am just listing things out here in this post.
